Professional Belly Dancer & Instructor
What made you want to go into your field?
Initially it was exercise, but I quickly fell in love with the music
and culture. I was amazed at how I became more comfortable in my own
body, and how my self-confidence had grown.
It was fascinating to me that I had found a dance form that accepted anyone, regardless of size, shape, or age.
What do you like most about your job? For the past
seven years, my passion has been performance. I love that this
profession serves a dual purpose of entertaining, while educating
people about an art form they are not exposed to on a daily basis.
I believe this dance has enriched my life, and by teaching, I have been
able to pass the benefits of fitness and self-confidence onto others.
What challenges do you face on a daily basis?
There are many misconceptions and negative stereotypes about this
ancient art form. The costuming and sensual nature tends to be
misconceived as something other than art.
This dance celebrates living, and is performed for joyous occasions
such as weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. It is also enjoyed at
many family oriented restaurants.
What characteristics does someone need to be successful in your field?
Obviously, physical training is very important. Technique and
creativity, along with strength and stamina, are also essential. A
professional dancer needs to be expressive and in touch with their
emotions. Musical interpretation and an understanding of the different
cultures this art form stemmed from, are equally as important.
Accessibility is very key in this line of work. Most of my work comes
from customers who have watched me perform, but lately my web site has
been my strongest marketing tool along with personal appearances.
As with any career, you must have a strong passion for your profession,
a professional attitude, and in Belly Dance, a desire to share this
ancient art form with others.
